At WCHS, we know that preventing and improving public health requires us to begin by addressing a wide range of social determinants of health. These factors, such as socioeconomic status, education, environment, and access to healthcare, significantly impact an individual's health outcomes. WCHS's community services play a crucial role in helping us to: 

  • Educate and empower our relatives to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their health in the form of classes, lunch and learns. 
  • Create safety spaces to allow individuals to share experiences, learn coping strategies, and reduce feelings of isolation in the form of support groups and meetings. 
  • Provide providing a stable environments in the form of shelters and halfway houses can improve overall health and well-being during times of transition and healing.
  • Promote habits of prioritizing physical activity and mental health to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes in the from of fitness classes, recreational sports, and weight management programs and mental health resources. 
  • Encourage a balanced diet and provide guidance on healthy eating habits, and meal programs ensure access to nutritious food, especially among vulnerable populations.
  • Enable access to care and reduce isolation in the form of transportation to healthcare appointments, grocery stores, and other essential services.

Providing essential supports as a safety net for vulnerable individuals and families and addressing social determinants of health creates a more equitable community environment that will allow everyone to be the healthiest version of themselves.
